New Dean of Students at the Vincent Smith School

New Dean of Students at the Vincent Smith School

The Vincent Smith School appointed Lois Dierlam as the new Dean of Students this past August, a position that oversees and manages student advising, conduct and achievement, testing, resource services, as well as in-service teacher training, and coordinating co- and extra-curricular activity programs.

Ms. Dierlam comes to the Vincent Smith School from Concordia College, where she served as an Associate Professor and the Chair of the Teacher Education Program. In her first months at the Vincent Smith School, Ms. Dierlam has found it to be “a phenomenal learning environment because of the small class size and the individualized learning. It really allows the child to flourish.”

Also new to the Vincent Smith School this year is the introduction in the lower school of grades 1-3. The administration found an unmet need in the community, and decided to open up additional grades in the lower school in response to parent requests. The School serves Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as Queens and the Bronx, because they are one of the only schools that serves the learning disabled population.

The School is well-known for its individualized program for students in grades 1-12 with AD/HD, and Learning Disabilities such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Auditory Processing Disorders, and Language (Expressive/Receptive) Processing Disorders. In addition to providing an academic education, the Vincent Smith School focuses on social-emotional learning, and ancillary services, such as occupational and speech therapy, counseling and psychotherapy.

The Vincent Smith School hosts open houses throughout the year, including Sunday, Jan. 24 at 12pm, and Wednesday, April 20 at 7pm. It has rolling admissions, and private tours are always available.
