Sabra Hummus Recalled for Listeria Risk

Sabra Hummus Recalled for Listeria Risk

Sabra Dipping Co. has voluntarily issued a recall of nearly all of its hummus products due to possible health risks.

The company issued a statement on Saturday, Nov. 19 urging consumers to discard most all of its hummus products with a “Best Before” date up through Jan. 23, 2017. The recall includes nearly all of the hummus products Sabra has on the market—57 varieties—in multiple sizes from the small to-go packages with pretzels to the larger tubs. Sabra's new line of sandwich spreads, Sabra SpreadsTM, is also included in the recall. See the full list here

The concern stems from Listeria monocytogenes, which was found at Sabra Dipping Co.’s manufacturing facility. Though it wasn’t found in the tested finished product, the company has issued the recall in the U.S. and Canada out of caution.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes even fatal infections in young children and the elderly as well as those with compromised immune systems, according to the FDA. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. People who are healthy are less at risk but may experience symptoms such as a high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to the FDA.

If you have Sabra Hummus in your home or children’s lunchboxes check the lid to find the "Best Before" date of the product to determine whether or not to throw it away. Contact your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about your family's health.
