Brooklyn Schools Named Finalists in Recycled Garden Giveaway

Brooklyn Schools Named Finalists in Recycled Garden Giveaway

Some things—desks, books, and pencils—are standard in schools, but how many schools can say they have their own garden? This year, with the hep of GoGo squeeZ, TerraCycle, and Action for Healthy Kids, one lucky school in Brooklyn will be the recipient of a brand new garden made completely from recycled waste.

The 2018 GoGo CareZ Garden Giveaway is a program designed to reward a school active in the Action for Healthy Kids network, anationwide grassroots network mobilizing school professionals, families, and communities to take actions that improve school foods, nutrition education, physical activity, and physical education for students. To host the giveaway, Action for Healthy Kids has partnered with GoGo squeeZ and TerraCycle.

The donated garden will be made from recycled waste collected through the GoGo squeeZ Recycling Program, which is a free, national collection of typically non-recyclable snack plastic pouches and caps. Waste collected through the program is sent to TerraCycle for recycling into new plastic products.

From now until November 30th, the public can show its support for the school of their choice by casting votes on the TerraCycle website. The school with the most votes will be announced as the winner.

“We’re excited to partner with GoGo squeeZ and Action for Healthy Kids to donate a recycled garden to a deserving school in the area," says Tom Szaky, CEO of TerraCycle. “This garden offers a unique opportunity to teach students to grow their own food, as well as how to create a healthy environment that is protected through recycling.”

29 Brooklyn area schools are in the running to win the garden.
