Autism Speaks and Manhattan’s Blue Man Group Present an Autism-Friendly Performance on Nov. 3

Autism Speaks and Manhattan’s Blue Man Group Present an Autism-Friendly Performance on Nov. 3

The international musicians, Blue Man Group, are having a special performance for children on the autism spectrum on November 3 in Astor Place.

The Blue Man Group, in conjunction with Autism Speaks, is hosting a sensory-friendly performance for children with sensitivity to stimulation or autism spectrum disorder. The sensory-friendly show, now in its fourth year, will feature amenities such as earplugs, a quiet area to take a break from the stimulation, and minimal interactions with the audience. There will also be lower lighting and reduced sound levels at certain time during the show.

The Blue Man Group is considered one of the 50 Things Every Child in NYC Should Experience, part of the Best Off-Broadway Shows for Kids, and a personal favorite of ours. The performance includes musical numbers with unconventional percussion instruments, theatrics consisting of both classic gags and more timely references, and more than a few laughs here and there.

“Blue is our signature color at Autism Speaks so it really did make sense to pursue a partnership [with Blue Man Group],” says Nicole Thornton, senior director, Field Development for Autism Speaks in New York, who serves as the local staff partner for the area. “Many individuals with autism are nonverbal and it is a silent performance from the blue men so I think there’s a certain sort of relatable aspect.”

The sensory-modified show is not only to provide individuals with autism with a comfortable and accommodating experience, but also to raise awareness about autism in the New York City area. As of 2018, 1 in 59 children will be diagnosed with autism, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The Blue Man Group performs at Astor Place Theatre, 434 Lafayette St. in Greenwich Village. The autism-friendly performance is Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2pm. Tickets are available for $65.50, which includes a $5 donation to Autism Speaks.
