Spring 2011 Bird Watching Events in Westchester County, NY


child with binoculars; boy bird watchingYou know spring has sprung when you can hear birds singing again, especially early in the morning. And you know it's the time to head outside with your family and some binoculars and do some bird-watching.

The Westmoreland Sanctuary has several bird observing activities this month. See wild song birds being captured, banded, and released in a Bird Banding Demonstration. Data is collected from these birds to advance bird science and conservation. May 1, 9am; May 7, 10:30am; May 21, 11am. Try Birding to Lost Pond to look for migratory and summer resident bird species. May 14, 8am. Check and record which nesting boxes in the sanctuary have nests, eggs, and/or young at Nextbox Monitoring. May 15, 2pm. All events are FREE. Westmoreland Sanctuary, 260 Chestnut Ridge Road, Mount Kisco. 914-666-8448.

Take a Warbler Walk and catch these small birds traveling through Ward Pound Ridge Reservation on their way to their breeding grounds. May 7, 8am. Get up even earlier and join Birding with Ed Kanze for an excursion to catch sight of returning songbirds. May 21, 7:30am. Both events are FREE. Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservations, Route 35 and 121 South, Cross River.



Take a Spring Bird Migration Hike to spot warblers, vireos, and other returning migratory birds. May 8. 7:30am. FREE. Marshlands Conservancy, Boston Post Road, Rye. 914-666-6503.

Are you new to bird watching? Take Bird Watching for Beginners and learn about different bird species and the gear needed to spot them in this 90-minute walk and talk. May 21. 1pm. FREE. Cranberry Lake Preserve, 1609 Old Orchard Street, North White Plains. 914-428-1005.

Come to the Teatown Lake Reservation for Birding the Back Forty to spot warblers and other spring birds with a guide. May 25. 7am. FREE. Teatown Lake Reservation, 1600 Spring Valley Road, Ossining.
