Brooklyn Artists Gym offers Free Housing to Single Parent Artists in the Park Slope/Gowanus Area

While the starving artist stereotype doesn’t exactly paint the picture (no pun intended) of an ideal situation, throw in a kid or two, and the struggling individual becomes a struggling family. Thankfully for a few local single-parent-artists, the Brooklyn Artists Gym (BAG), an artists’ studio and gallery facility in the Park Slope/Gowanus area of Brooklyn, can provide help in the form of a free or subsidized studio space home.

The BAG Fund program, which also helps participants further their art careers, allows artists who are bringing up children solo to apply for scholarships for Open Studio memberships. These memberships offer access to 4000 square feet of atelier-style space, drying racks for paintings, lockers, critiques, participation in group shows, and many other amenities to make the making of art a bit easier. For those who wish to apply for a spot in the ongoing program, BAG is announcing a November 1 deadline for all applications.
