Norwalk's non-profit Crystal Theatre will be offering six separate theatre camps this summer. Four of them take place at our air-conditioned S. Norwalk studios at Ben Franklin Center, and the other two multi-arts camps are at beautiful Cranbury Park, in conjunction with the City of Norwalk. Crystal Theatre Summer Camp Listings Broadway Blast 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, 9th Grade, 10th Grade For current (2012-2013 school year) 4th - 10th Graders Monday, June 24th - Saturday, June 29th—weekdays 9:00am-3:30pm [No class on Saturday, only a performance] Performances on Friday June 28th and Saturday, June 29th at 7:30pm This Camp and the Performances Take Place at the Ben Franklin Theatre 66 Bayview Ave. Norwalk, CT 06854 Crystal Theatre’s Broadway Boot Camp is the perfect way to quickly raise the level of your musical performance ability! Focusing on solo performance of primarily Broadway music, you will leave your last performance with an audition song that you have now performed in front of an audience. Songs are arranged to audition length to best show off your talents. You will also take part in big Broadway medleys to gain experience in what it takes to put across a show-stopping production number. Students participate in both performances and also engage in theatre games and acting exercises--which all contribute to developing their musical performance skills. Taught by Crystal Theatre Artistic Director and Musical Director Cheryl Kemeny with choreography by Char Fromentin of Dance Dimensions. Performances on Thursday, July 18th at 7:30pm and Friday,July 19th at 7:30pm This Camp and the Performances Take Place at the Ben Franklin Theatre 66 Bayview Ave. Norwalk, CT 06854 Step back in time to an earlier era (1939) and join this itinerant troupe of performers! “The Friendship Players” are in financial difficulty so their producer hires the famous “Darlene Divine” and her boyfriend, Lance, to star in their new show. Unfortunately, the talented Miss Divine is a diva who is mean to all her co-performers. When Lance falls for the sweet Caroline, the other cast members get caught up in the intrigue and the “not-so-nice” Miss Divine receives her come-uppance. Sing and dance your heart out in this musical by David L. Jackins with period style show-stoppers and beautiful ballads that provide opportunities for lots of solos. All students will develop their acting skills, not only through performance but during structured acting exercises and theatre games throughout the day. The 2 performances are “double-cast” (which means that all the lead parts have 2 performers-one performs a lead at each performance. When not performing a lead part, the actor sings and dances with the ensemble-thereby doubling the learning experience! Hansel & Gretal Kindergarden, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade For current (2012-2013 school year) Kindergarten - 3rd Graders Monday, July 29th - Friday, August 2nd 9:00am - 2:00pm Performances on Saturday, August 3rd at 3:30pm & 6:30pm This Camp and the Performances Take Place at the Ben Franklin Theatre 66 Bayview Ave. Norwalk, CT 06854 For the younger set, Crystal Theatre’s original musical-- based on Humperdinck’s famous opera—has acting parts for all. Crystal Theatre artistic director and award-winning playwright/composer Cheryl Kemeny has written a child-friendly script with music from the opera as well as additional lively songs to engage young actors. Hansel and Gretel and their friends have no fear of playing in the woods—despite rumors of witches who have been spotted flying about. When their mother sends them in search of berries for dinner they lose track of time and find themselves alone. Angels come to watch over them after the sandmen put them to sleep and the beautiful dew-fairies awaken them in the morning. They find a magical house covered in candy and cannot resist the temptation to eat just a little. The witch who lives there captures them and places them under a spell saving them for a later dinner while she goes off to party with her fellow witches. The clever Hansel and Gretel come up with a rescue plan with the help of some neighboring mice and save themselves and their friends. Children learn the basics of singing, acting and stage dance and demonstrate their accomplishments in 2 Saturday performances on stage and open to the public. Her “5 greats”-grandmother was a female pirate and had hidden a treasure somewhere off the Norwalk shore! So begins this musical adventure written by Margaret Jackins with music and lyrics by Cheryl E. Kemeny. With many parts for various ages this show is an ideal learning vehicle for students wishing to enhance their singing/acting/dancing abilities.All students will develop their acting skills, not only through performance but during structured acting exercises and theatre games throughout the day. Older students start their day by taking two of the four elective classes offered(Scene Study(must take if your child wants a speaking part in the final show), Watercolors, Dance or Sports and Games), then join the younger group for lunch and games in a way to get to know everyone at camp and lastly they finish off the day learning music and choreography to various Broadway and Pop medleys for the final show. Classes take place both inside and outside. A month before camp you will be emailed a website where you and your child will be able to select the two elective classes he or she would like to take. The audition process can seem daunting and intimidating, but never fear! This class is specially geared to prepare students for fall auditions. Students will get to take part in various master classes and mock auditions, and the program will conclude with a performance for a live audience. Each student will sing an entire song, a 32-bar cut of a different song, and perform an audition monologue. Be confident that you will be successful at your next audition after this class! Class is taught by Boston Conservatory trained singer and longtime Crystal Theatre Director and Voice Teacher Joe Santaniello and Singer and Collaborative Pianist Shannon Collins who holds a Musical Theatre and Music Degree from New York University.
